The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C., has an opening for an assistant sports editor with responsibility for assigning sports reporters on daily and long-term stories, brainstorming ideas for enterprise and driving content online.

It will take a leader to fill this position, someone with original ideas, the ability to handle print and digital journalism with imagination and the ability to envision and deliver special stories that readers will remember.

The assistant sports editor helps reporters set agendas for their beats, creating and executing coverage plans and coordinating with the editors from the photo, online and print staffs. We want an editor who can shape a story with a reporter while using all the tools available at a time when the possibilities are unlimited. We want great stories that jump off the home page as well as the front page.

Vision, flexibility, organization, communication and technological savvy are all vital.

The sports section is part of a merged Raleigh and Charlotte team that that covers ACC basketball and football, NHL, NFL and NBA teams and NASCAR.

We ask reporters to break news online first and develop stories throughout the day, into print and beyond. We also want to help them do watchdog journalism and the best enterprise of their careers in a sports market that can match any in the country when it comes to energy, rivalries and sports passion.
